About the Position
The Web Application Developer will design, develop, document, maintain and test custom web applications, public-facing websites and packaged system solutions supporting the University of Washington Information School.
The role involves full-stack development, system integrations, Drupal development, database architecture, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, application security, performance monitoring and project management.
Key Responsibilities
Full-Stack Web Development
- Design, build and maintain full-stack web applications.
- Develop custom integrations between university systems and third-party platforms.
- Develop and maintain public-facing Drupal websites, custom modules, themes and configurations.
- Design and manage database schemas and application environments.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Docker and GitHub Actions.
- Conduct code reviews, refactoring and automated testing.
- Ensure application security, encryption and access management.
- Monitor system performance, logs, reliability and uptime.
- Support cloud infrastructure, scalability, backups and disaster recovery.
- Prepare technical documentation, data flow diagrams and system documentation.
- Evaluate and use LLMs and generative AI tools to improve development workflows.
Project Management
- Lead projects from discovery and development through maintenance and retirement.
- Gather requirements and define project scope and timelines.
- Prepare technical specifications and development plans.
- Communicate technical requirements to non-technical stakeholders.
- Develop training materials and user support resources.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related technical field.
- Minimum 2 years of web application development experience using PHP, JavaScript or another object-oriented programming language.
- Professional experience with PHP, JavaScript and MySQL.
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and web standards.
- Experience with Linux command line and Git or similar version-control systems.
- Knowledge of web stack installation, deployment, troubleshooting, security and performance monitoring.
- Familiarity with RESTful web services and JavaScript frameworks.
- Understanding of usability, UI design and accessibility.
- Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Laravel, Symfony, Django or Rails.
- Experience with NPM, NodeJS and webpack/Vite.
- Drupal CMS development experience.
- Experience designing complex database schemas.
- Experience with Docker and Docker Compose.
- Experience with Docker Swarm or Kubernetes.
- Experience managing and deploying different server environments.
- Strong understanding of usability and accessibility principles.
